Damascus govt. sets the date for holding "People's Assembly elections"

Al-Assad set next July 15 as the date for the elections of the so-called “Syrian People’s Council,” but according to the results of the last elections, the members of this council are known even before voting begins.

Today, Bashar al-Assad issued a decree setting the date for the elections of the so-called “Syrian People’s Assembly” for the fourth legislative round, next July 15.

The presidential decree specified the number of members of the People’s Assembly allocated to each of the workers and peasants sector and the rest of the people’s sectors in the electoral districts. The People’s Assembly includes 250 seats.

However, according to the results of the last elections, the members of this council are known even before voting begins, as the majority of those who will be elected are from the so-called “National Progressive Front” list governed by the Baath Party, not to mention the merchants of crisis and war and those close to the ruling power circles in Damascus.

Since the 1960s, Syria has been experiencing a farce called the People’s Assembly elections, which turned into a tragic play after the 2011 crisis, in light of the state of economic collapse, due to insistence on the new, old, exclusionary mentality, ignoring UN Resolution 2,254, which calls for holding democratic elections. In the country according to a new Syrian constitution.
