Damascus Government undermines solutions, prolongs suffering of displaced 

Aziza Hassan, Co-Chair of Ain Issa City Council and a native of the town of Suluk in the Girê Spî, commented on the latest statements from the Damascus government regarding North and East Syria. She said these positions were characterized by threats rather than efforts to find solutions that could end the plight of the displaced.

Hassan stressed that such negative remarks undermine ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the continued suffering of displaced people in camps.

She explained that the Turkish offensive on Girê Spî and its countryside on October 9, 2019, displaced more than 100,000 people, forcing them to live in camps and uninhabitable buildings under harsh conditions after losing their main sources of livelihood.

She further noted: “The presence of Turkish occupation bases and its armed factions constitutes the greatest obstacle to the return of residents to their homes,” expressing disappointment that the terms of the March 10 agreement signed between the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the transitional government have not been implemented, despite the great hopes displaced families placed on it.

In conclusion, Hassan called on the transitional government to take serious steps toward implementing the agreement and ensuring the safe return of displaced people to their towns and villages, thereby putting an end to their ongoing suffering.
