The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus issued a life sentence against defendant Ahmad Hassoun after convicting him of the felony of acts that incite civil war and sectarian fighting, during the sixth session of his trial.

Court President Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan said the court had found Hassoun guilty, noting that evidence showed the official religious establishment, particularly the Fatwa Council, was used under the former regime to provide religious cover for military and security operations and justify them to the public.

Al-Aryan added that Hassoun was found to have been involved in crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as providing regular financial support to the leadership and members of the Jerusalem Brigade, which took part in military operations.
