Damascus Criminal Court sentences Bashar al-Assad, Atef Najib to death

The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus issued a ruling today sentencing Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, Atef Najib to death in person, and a number of former officials who had fled the country to death in absentia, after convicting them of murder, torture and crimes against humanity.

During the sentencing session, Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan said the court unanimously found Bashar al-Assad guilty of intentional and premeditated murder against more than one person, including children, in addition to torture, arbitrary detention and crimes against humanity, and sentenced him to death.

The court also unanimously convicted Atef Najib of murder, torture and incitement to murder, and sentenced him to death.

The death sentences also included a number of fugitives named in the case file: Maher Hafez al-Assad, Fahd Jassem al-Freij, Mohammed Ayman Ayoush, Louay Ali al-Ali, Qusay Ibrahim Mahyoub, Wafiq Saleh Nasser, and Talal Fares al-Asimi, after convicting them of intentional and premeditated murder and torture resulting in death.
