Co-Chair of TEV-DEM: elections excluding key Syrian components lack legitimacy

The Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) rejected the Syrian Interim Government’s announcement of holding parliamentary elections between September 15 and 20, considering them unrepresentative of the Syrian people's will and composition, including women.

In a statement to ANHA agency from Qamishlo, TEV-DEM Co-Chair Ramziya Muhammad said, "These elections are unacceptable as they do not stem from a free will and do not reflect the demands of the Syrian people who have revolted for more than 14 years for democratic change, equality, and justice."

She added that "the insistence of the Damascus government to ignore the people's demands has led to displacement, massacres, and the occupation of Syrian lands by neighboring countries," emphasizing that "continuing this approach entrenches tyranny and blocks any political solution."

Ramziya Muhammad pointed out that excluding North and East Syria and Swedia from the electoral process renders it illegitimate, stating, "A parliament that excludes essential components cannot represent the Syrian people."

She stressed that TEV-DEM will not accept these elections, clarifying that "true democratic elections can only be realized when occupation, repression, and looting end, and the people go freely to the ballot boxes."
