QAMISHLO

The Rojava Center for Strategic Studies (NRLS) organized a forum entitled "Migration and the Kurdish Political Movement in Western Kurdistan" in the Zana Hall in the city of Qamishlo, in which representatives of political parties, movements and organizations, intellectuals, religious and human rights institutions, researchers and social figures participated.

After standing a minute of silence for the souls of the martyrs of freedom, a member of the Rojava Center for Strategic Studies' administrative body, Kurdiar Derei, shed light on the displacement policies against the Kurdish people in the past and present, and the challenges and obstacles that the displaced people suffer from.

After the Turks migrated to Anatolia and the Middle East, they displaced the Kurds, exterminated the Armenians, and committed massacres against the Syriacs, and he explained: "They displaced 700,000 of the Kurdish people, and the Armenians are still suffering from the repercussions of the genocide."

Derei referred to what the Kurdish people suffered in the past, and said: "During the era of Ataturk, the revolutions and uprisings carried out by the Kurdish people, starting with the Sheikh Saeed revolution, through the Dersim, Agri, and Gali Zilan revolutions, were crushed, and were met with the displacement of the Kurds from their regions."

Derei referred to the displacement operations in Eastern and Southern Kurdistan, saying: "During the Anfal and the Halabja massacre during the era of Saddam Hussein's regime, more than 180,000 Kurds were killed, and 50,000 Kurds were displaced during the era of the Safavid Shah in eastern Kurdistan for political reasons."

Derai shed light on what the Kurdish people are suffering from at present: "During the devastating earthquake that occurred in northern Kurdistan, under the pretext of aid, they tried to change the demographics of the areas where the Kurds live."

Derai pointed out that the Kurds suffered greatly after the occupation of Afrin, Serekaniye/ Ras al-Ain and Gire Spi/ Tal Abyed by the Turkish occupation state, and said: "A demographic change is taking place in the occupied areas, and the homes of the indigenous people are being seized, and their picturesque nature is being changed by cutting down trees and turning them into a barren desert, within the framework of systematic policies to kill life in Afrin."

Derei explained that 700,000 people were forcibly displaced from Afrin, Gire Spi and Serekaniye during the attacks of the Turkish occupation.

A television program presented by the Rojava Center for Strategic Studies shed light on the suffering of the displaced people in the camps, and monitored their opinions on the extent of the Kurdish political movement's support for them and their demands for how to raise their issue at the international level.

The first session ended with the Rojava Center for Strategic Studies presenting the results of a survey conducted by the center on the support provided by Kurdish political parties to the displaced. It confirmed that the political parties did not put the issue of the displaced on their priorities.

The participants called on the Kurdish political movement to strengthen the diplomatic level to put pressure international bodies and give them a picture of what the displaced are living and suffering, and to work with them to return the displaced to their original homeland and end the occupation.

The participants demanded the formation of a committee whose mission is to conduct visits abroad to convey the issue of the displaced to international, human rights and humanitarian forums, and the necessity of carrying out various activities and events at home and abroad to pressure world opinion.

The participants focused on the suffering of women and children in the camps, and the necessity of standing up to the displacement policies pursued by the Turkish occupation.

The participants stressed the need to unify the Kurdish political movement and put the issue of displaced persons on their main agenda.
