Britain imposes sanctions on mercenaries involved in crimes in Syria

Britain announced today that it has imposed new sanctions on mercenaries and mercenary groups involved in crimes and violations against civilians in Syria.

The British Foreign Office stated that the sanctions include: Ghiyath Dallah and Miqdad Fatiha, both former military commanders in the Baath regime forces; Mohammad al-Jassem (Abu Amsha), leader of the Sultan Suleiman Shah Division; Saif Boulad, leader of the Hamza Division; as well as businessmen Mudallal Khouri and Imad Khouri, who are accused of providing financial support to the Baath regime.

The ministry added that the sanctions also target three mercenary groups: Sultan Murad, Sultan Suleiman Shah, and Hamza.

The ministry said that those listed are suspected of involvement in acts of violence in Syria’s coastal regions, particularly in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus earlier this year, in addition to their participation in atrocities committed during the Syrian civil war.

The ministry quoted British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper as saying that these measures “send a clear message that those who committed acts of violence against Syrian civilians will be held accountable,” stressing London’s commitment to supporting political transition and economic recovery in Syria.

The sanctions include freezing assets within the United Kingdom, imposing travel bans, and prohibiting the listed individuals from holding managerial positions in British companies or companies linked to the UK.
