“Attacking national symbols contradicts values on which our revolution built”

The Preparatory Committee for Newroz 2026 issued a statement to the public today, read at the Autonomous Administration building in Kobani by Hevi Ibrahim, which said: "Yesterday, Saturday, March 21, our Kurdish people celebrated Newroz across different parts of Syria as a national occasion, as joy and happiness filled all celebration squares, and all components of the Syrian people shared the happiness of this occasion. The Newroz celebration in Kobani witnessed wide public participation from our Kurdish people, reflecting the special place this occasion holds for the Kurds, as it represents a symbol of struggle against oppression and slavery, and an affirmation of the struggle to achieve freedom.

On behalf of the Preparatory Committee for Newroz Kobani 2026, we extend our thanks to everyone who attended the celebration, to the artistic groups that participated with their diverse performances expressing the authenticity and richness of Kurdish folklore, culture, and art, to the media outlets that covered the celebration in the best way, and to everyone who contributed to concluding the event safely and peacefully.

We also note that the act of one individual lowering the Syrian flag during the Newroz celebration in the city of Kobani is a rejected and unacceptable act in every sense, and we affirm that what happened does not go beyond being an individual and irresponsible act. The Internal Security Forces followed the incident from its first moments and are taking all necessary measures in accordance with the applicable laws.

The Preparatory Committee for Newroz Kobani affirms that attacking and insulting national symbols contradicts the values and principles on which our revolution was built, and such actions that harm social stability in Syria will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Exploiting such incidents to spread discord and division among the components of the Syrian people harms national unity. Therefore, it is necessary to stand against anyone who threatens stability and security in Syria, to strengthen peaceful coexistence among all Syrian components, and to block the way for anyone trying to ignite conflict among Syrians, the results of which will not serve the people of this country. We stress the need for caution and to avoid repeating the scenario of the events of March 12, 2004, and to resort to the law before anything else."
