Alarming rise in violence against women in S. Kurdistan

In a worrying escalation of crimes involving violence and murder against women in South Kurdistan, four women were killed, two others were injured, and the body of another woman was found during the month of May.

South Kurdistan witnessed a notable increase in crimes of violence against women throughout May, with four women killed and two others injured in separate shootings, while the body of a woman was found under mysterious circumstances.

According to information obtained by Roj News Agency, the following murder cases were recorded:

May 3: An 18-year-old young man killed his 17-year-old sister by shooting her 11 times in the Tirawa neighborhood of Hawler. The police later arrested the perpetrator.

May 20: A 29-year-old woman was injured in a shooting in Duhok province. The suspect was later taken into custody.

May 23: The body of a woman named Khurman Shamsaddin was found in Hawler. No official explanation regarding the circumstances of her death has been issued so far.

May 31: A 40-year-old woman was killed, and three other people, including a young woman, were injured in a shooting that targeted a house in the Qandil neighborhood of the Jargorneh area on the outskirts of Sulaymaniyah.

On the same day, another woman was shot dead in front of the "Dream City" housing project in Hawler by a gunman who fired 10 bullets at her.

These incidents are part of an alarming trend of increasing violence against women in South Kurdistan. In the first four months of 2025 alone, 10 women were killed, in addition to 9 others who died under circumstances described as “mysterious.”
