Al-Shaibani: Damascus engaged in negotiations with Israel through US mediation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Interim Government, Asaad al-Shaibani, made statements today to Euronews on the sidelines of his participation in the EU-Syria Partnership Coordination Forum held in Brussels.

He stated that Israel "has not ceased since January 8, 2014, its threats to stability in Syria, its undermining of security, and its targeting of military and civilian infrastructure under flimsy and unfounded pretexts," emphasizing that Syria wants "peace, not normalization."

Al-Shaibani noted that Damascus has already engaged in negotiations with Israel, mediated by the United States, expressing his hope that these negotiations will lead to "a peaceful and comprehensive agreement that respects Syria's sovereignty."

He said that Syria desires to reach a security agreement with Israel that guarantees respect for the sovereignty of both parties and maintains stability, but it "rejects" any path to normalization imposed by military force or political pressure.

He called on Israel to withdraw from the Syrian territories it has occupied since 2014.
