AANES repairs it and occupation bombs it, leaving 200,000 people without water

The water station in the village of Sheikhler Foqani, west of Kobani, was established in 1998 and provides water for a region inhabited by approximately 200,000 people. However, like all vital and service facilities in North and East Syria, it has been a target of Turkish occupation attacks.

The station is located on the bank of the Euphrates River, opposite the city of Jarablus, which is occupied by Turkey and its mercenaries. As a result, it has become one of the areas frequently targeted by Turkish state attacks.

According to information obtained from the Water Directorate in the Euphrates region, in addition to daily mortar shelling, Turkish warplanes have bombed the station four times over the past three years, once in 2023, once in 2024, and twice in 2025.

The Station provided water after the Tishrin Dam went out of service

The water and electricity crisis resurfaced with the start of Turkish state attacks on Tishrin Dam and the Qereqozaqê Bridge on December 8. The dam, which provided water and electricity to most of the Euphrates region, sustained severe damage.

On December 10, the Energy Body of North and East Syria announced that the Tishrin Dam had gone out of service due to the attacks, leading to water and electricity outages across the Euphrates Canton.

Following these attacks, the Euphrates Canton administration repaired the water station in Sheikhler Foqani, restoring water supply to more than 200,000 people.

However, Turkish warplanes bombed the station again on February 2, cutting off water to most of the Canton. The local administration is now working to resolve the issue.

Co-Chair of the Water Directorate: "We restarted the station, but..."

Masoud Bozi, the co-chair of the Water Directorate in the Euphrates Canton, spoke to ANHA agency about the situation and shared details of their work.

Bozi explained that Tishrin Dam used to supply 70% of the Euphrates Canton's water and electricity needs. However, due to Turkish bombardment, the dam went out of service, shutting down most water stations reliant on its electricity, leaving Kobani, Serrin, and their surrounding villages without water.

He noted that the Sheikhler Foqani water station was repaired after the dam outage and operated using generators to provide water to the region. However, Turkish warplanes bombed it again on February 2, putting it out of service once more.

Bozi emphasized that the station supplies water to Kobani, the villages of Sheikhler Foqani and Sheikhler Tahtani, and over 50 other villages west of Kobani. He confirmed that more than 200,000 people in these areas have been deprived of water.

"Its repair requires $500,000"

Masoud Bozi revealed that the station has suffered severe damage and that repairing it would require $500,000.

He explained that, for now, water is being distributed via tankers in collaboration with local municipalities to ensure residents are not left completely without water. In some areas, people are relying on old water wells and sharing their resources with neighbors.

Bozi stressed that they are doing everything possible to find a lasting solution, but the ongoing attacks create significant obstacles.
