5,000 Turkish liras fine for fleeing occupied areas’ misery

Turkish-backed mercenaries are imposing a heavy financial penalty on anyone attempting to escape the deteriorating living conditions in the occupied city of Girê Spî/Tal Abyad.

A local source from the town of Soluk, which belongs to Girê Spî/Tal Abyad, reported that Turkish-backed factions are imposing a fine on anyone caught trying to flee the city for work. The amount required for release is 5,000 Turkish liras.

According to the source, residents have grown weary of the abuses committed by the Turkish-backed groups and the extortion they impose on civilians already struggling with dire economic conditions. As a result, many try to reach Turkey in search of work.

The source added that anyone caught inside Turkey is handed over to the factions through the border gate and is not released until the payment is made.

Since Turkey and its proxies seized Girê Spî in late 2019, the city has suffered from severe hardship and lacks even the basic necessities of life, with the mercenaries controlling all aspects of daily living.
