21 Kurdish parties reject parliament appointments

Representatives of 21 Kurdish parties and movements announced at a press conference their rejection of the recent parliamentary appointments and the mechanism for allocating seats in Hasaka. They stated that these appointments do not reflect the will of the people and perpetuate a policy of exclusion and marginalization, reproducing central authority through new mechanisms.

Representatives of 21 Kurdish political parties and movements held a press conference today at the Foreign Relations Department building in Qamishlo, regarding the parliamentary appointments (People's Assembly) that took place in Hasaka and the mechanism for distributing seats within it.

During the conference, a statement was read in Kurdish by Dalal Hashim, head of the Women's office of the Executive Office of the Democratic Green Party, and in Arabic by Farhad Tilo, Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Liberal Party.

The statement read:

"We have followed with interest the developments regarding the completion of the formation of the Syrian People's Assembly, including the appointment of its members and the mechanism for distributing seats and quotas allocated to the Kurdish people in Rojava. We previously announced our clear position of non-participation in this process, based on our conviction that the mechanisms employed do not reflect the will of the Kurdish people and the other components of the region, nor do they establish a truly democratic political process.

In light of the announced results and the appointment process, we affirm that these individuals represent only themselves.

The Syrian people have sacrificed to achieve a democratic system and fair representation for all national, ethnic, religious, and women's identities. Our Kurdish people have also suffered greatly from policies of exclusion and denial, and have spared no sacrifice in the Syrian revolution and in Rojava."

However, what transpired once again revealed a policy of exclusion and marginalization through the selective appointment of several individuals. This contradicts the most basic principles of democracy, justice, and genuine national partnership.

We affirm that these policies reproduce the mentality and traditional methods of the central authority and confirm the continued application of exceptional laws and procedures, albeit with new tools and mechanisms. These new tools attempt to give a semblance of legitimacy to the political process through voting boxes and mechanisms that lack credibility and popular legitimacy. This also perpetuates projects of demographic change by appointing individuals from the Arab al-Ghamr region to electoral committees, as well as appointing one of them as a representative for the Serêkaniyê region.

Building a modern, democratic Syria based on genuine partnership and mutual recognition among all its components will not be achieved through policies of exclusion appointments, but rather through a comprehensive national political process that guarantees fair representation and the free will of all Syrians.

We, the undersigned parties and powers, affirm that a genuine Syrian national conference must be convened, with the participation of true representatives of all Syrian components, to develop a roadmap for this transitional period and prepare for free, fair, and transparent elections that reflect the aspirations of the Syrian people, and to form a constitutional drafting committee, which is among the national priorities that must be at the top of the list under the current circumstances.

May Syria remain a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state.
