1st convoy of Serê Kaniyê IDPs prepares to return tomorrow

Displaced people from the city of Serê Kaniyê began making final preparations on Sunday morning to return to their homes and villages as part of the first convoy, which is scheduled to depart on Monday morning for the city, following years of displacement. The displaced have begun dismantling their tents and packing their belongings and furniture.

Meanwhile, the Serê Kaniyê / Ras al-Ayn Displaced Persons Committee, in coordination with the relevant authorities overseeing the return process, is completing the necessary arrangements for the return. These include registering the names of those returning on Monday and distributing financial receipts to them at the camps and in the city center, as well as coordinating transportation and the transfer of their belongings and essential items to their areas.

In this regard, Zahra Samou, an administrator with the Serê Kaniyê Displaced Persons Committee, told ANHA agency: “After years of suffering, we have begun preparations for the departure of the first convoy of displaced people by registering their names and providing them with financial receipts as support to help meet their needs as they return to their destroyed homes. We are also coordinating with the Commission to arrange vehicles for the displaced so they can begin loading their furniture and belongings.”

She added: “The situation in the city and its villages is dire due to the destruction and devastation. The financial compensation is intended to support the displaced people so they can meet their needs during the return process and repair their homes.”

She confirmed that the first convoy will depart on Monday morning, with people gathering in front of Washokani Camp in the town of Tuwaynah, northern Hasakah, and that the return will take place safely and with dignity.

She noted that registration for those wishing to return will not be limited to the displaced people included in the first convoy; however, it will continue in the coming period to include other families wishing to return to Serê Kaniyê.

Zahra explained that on Sunday, the committee began coordinating with institutions in several cities, including Dêrik, Darbasiyah, Tell Tamer and Amuda, to register the names of families who were unable to register previously and wish to return to Serê Kaniyê.

She added that the registration process will expand over the next few days to include major cities, particularly Qamishlo and Hasakah, and that the date and registration procedures will be announced through the committee’s platform.
