The Noon Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom is an attempt by active women in the Middle East and North Africa region, to return the favor and support those who have repeatedly stood with their ink and thought in the first line of defense for all women.

The Noon for Ocalan Freedom Initiative aims to achieve the release of the international leader Abdullah Ocalan, and in this regard, it aspires to introduce his thought and spread his ideas and philosophy, in addition to introducing his tireless struggle to support oppressed peoples and support the right of peoples to self-determination, in addition to protecting minorities and various cultural identities. Ethnic and ideological, and defending its right to identity stipulated by all human laws.

Twenty-four years after the arbitrary arrest carried out by the Turkish authorities of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, in cooperation with international powers, according to a plan for a heinous international conspiracy that ended with his kidnapping and arrest in Europe, and a year after the launch of the initiative, the initiative’s coordinator, Sawsan Shoman, reiterates that the initiative is to return the favor. For a leader who raised women’s rights at the forefront of his attention, pointing out that the launch of the initiative represented a process of giving back to a thinker who spread his idea in the world to create strong women, and singled out women with a stand-alone Jinoloji (women’s science), and presented ideas that affirmed and taught women that preserving identity does not mean closing off to oneself. The self, but rather by being open to others, and preserving “our femininity as women.”

Sawsan Shoman confirmed to ANHA's agency that the most important work accomplished during the year was monthly awareness sessions on the thought of leader Abdullah Ocalan, and the most important aspects of his philosophy in general, and for women in particular. Jinoloji was discussed, and its impact on the experience of Kurdish women in the liberation struggle against society. And against the "terrorist" parties, the awareness sessions varied between: the democratic nation - gender - women in Ocalan's philosophy.

She added, "The initiative organized periodic meetings with a variety of points and topics, in which the work completed in the previous period was often evaluated and a plan was drawn up to address the next stage, in addition to participating in the Syrian Dialogue Forum on the anniversary of the conspiracy, which was held in Raqqa, northern Syria, where participation took place via video." With my colleague in the initiative, Fernaz Attia, and holding a symposium in the Beka'a on the anniversary of the international conspiracy against Leader Abdullah Ocalan. This symposium had a positive impact on the souls of those present, as it was attended by a crowd of feminist activists who unanimously agreed in their absolute support for the philosophy and thought of Leader Ocalan and the support he provided. And support for women.”

The initiative's coordinator explained, "From January 23 to 26, 2023, an international delegation organized by the Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe visited the Council of Europe in an attempt to highlight the violation of human dignity and other rights of Abdullah Ocalan, who still languishes in complete isolation. The aim was also to highlight the importance of this Kurdish leader’s thought in liberating women around the world, and to draw attention to the serious violation of human rights and the rights of political prisoners in Turkey. Sawsan Shoman continued by narrating the annual report of the Noon Initiative, saying: “We participated in the demonstration organized before the European Council in the name of the Noon Initiative, to confirm the rejection of the violations committed by the Turkish authorities against Leader Ocalan, and the delegation noted with regret that the European institutions do not have quick and effective mechanisms for enforcement.” The Convention on Human Rights in Turkey, but welcomes the commitment of some members to defend human rights, and would like to insist on the necessity of exerting efforts and media and social pressure on all members of the Council of Europe in order to reach a serious solution to the Kurdish issue.

Sawsan Shoman confirmed that the members of the initiative participated in in-person and remote conferences, the most prominent of which were: the Leader’s Lawyers Forum in northern Syria, a conference in Iraq on the anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, another conference in Iraq, the Middle East Forum for Federalism, in addition to several television and press interviews with Kurdish channels. And others: Women’s Channel, Hawar news agency, and these meetings were focused on the initiative’s activities.”

As for the initiative’s plans for this year, Sawsan Shoman confirmed to ANHA's agency that the initiative’s members are continuing in several in-person and remote forums, and the “Noon Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom” also looks forward to working to put pressure on relevant international organizations, institutions and bodies, both legal and political, to break their deafening silence regarding the issue. This is a just cause and it is performing its assigned roles in defense of human rights in general, the rights of political detainees in particular, and the rights of leader Abdullah Ocalan in particular.”
