Will the siege of Damascus repeat what happened last winter in Sheikh Maqsoud -Achrafieh neighborhoods?

The people of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh neighborhoods are living in a state of anticipation as they do not yet know whether heating diesel will be distributed to them or not? They live in a scene when winter arrives, as a result of the continued siege of the Damascus government, which increases their suffering, especially since two children died last winter as a result of the cold.

Will the siege of Damascus repeat what happened last winter in Sheikh Maqsoud -Achrafieh neighborhoods?

ALEPPO, NISREEN SHEIKHO

The Damascus government continues to impose its unjust siege on the Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo, and prevents the passage of basic supplies, including fuel, to the people.

Despite the harsh climate in winter and its diseases, most of which lead to death in the absence of treatment and warmth, the Damascus government deliberately imposes a siege on the two neighborhoods.

Human losses as a result of the siege

Last winter, as a result of the delay in the distribution of diesel fuel until February, i.e. the end of winter, as a result of the Damascus government preventing the crossing of diesel tanks into the two neighborhoods, and the lack of purchasing power among the people for free diesel fuel, two children, one of them an infant, lost their lives. However, for the Damascus government, this was not a sufficient reason to lift the siege.

The child Wissam Sido (4 years old) died on January 2, 2023 as a result of the extreme cold in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh neighborhoods, as one of the results of the continued siege imposed by the Damascus government.

On January 4, the infant, Hussein Abdullah Kibar, (17 days old) also died, making him the second child to die as a result of the cold.

The depreciation of currency and the siege are a disaster

To know the conditions of the two neighborhoods closely, the Deputy co-chairmanship of the General Council of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh neighborhoods, Arin Hanan, stated that the economic and living situation is unstable, as a result of depreciation of currency against the US dollar, and the siege is making matters worse.

Arin pointed out that the siege is delaying the process of distributing diesel, and said: “In the regions of NE, Syria, families have received and are still obtaining heating material, but the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods are deprived of warmth as a result of the Damascus government’s siege.”

Arin noted that there are no preparations yet to distribute the heating material, since the Damascus government is still crossing its checkpoints preventing its entry, and she said: “Only if they allow the heating material to enter the two neighborhoods, we will distribute it immediately, to avoid what happened last year, such as the death of the two children.”

Arin called on the concerned authorities and human rights organizations to put pressure on the Damascus government to lift the siege and bring heating material into the two neighborhoods before winter arrives. She said: “Whoever is concerned must act and do their duty to end the people’s suffering.”
