UN confirms that Turkish occupation and its mercenaries committing war crimes in Syria

The UN Independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria held a press conference at the United Nations building in the Swiss capital, Geneva, and revealed in its report, covering the period from January 1 to June 30, 2023, that they will hold the fifty-third session on human rights, starting from September 11 until October 13.

The head of the committee, Paulo Pinheiro, spoke during the press meeting and pointed to the increase in violence in Syria, which is declining economically. He said: “The parties to the conflict in Syria arbitrarily arrest civilians and practice torture, enforced disappearance, and assassinate them; That they continue to commit war crimes".

Paulo Pinheiro spoke about the prisons in which ISIS mercenaries are detained, Al-Hol camp, and the days in which their families are detained. He called on countries to receive their citizens and try ISIS mercenaries fairly for the crimes they committed.

The report indicated an increase in battles between the Turkish occupation state and the SDF, and it was confirmed that the attacks of the Turkish occupation state target civilians through its attacks, especially in Aleppo, Hasaka, Raqqa, Ain Issa, and Tal Tamr.

The report drew attention to the violations committed by the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries in the areas it occupied, and proved that the "National Army" mercenaries and its affiliated groups committed war crimes against humanity against the Kurds.

The report also stated that Kurds are being arrested on charges of having realations with the Autonomous Administration and are being tortured and forcibly displaced.

As a result of the committee’s investigations, the report stated that Turkish officers and soldiers were still present in police stations in the occupied Serêkaniyê and Girê Spi, and confirmed that severe torture had been committed against Kurdish civilians by these Turkish soldiers.

The report stressed that Turkey is responsible for human rights violations in the occupied territories, and that Turkey must act in accordance with international human rights law and commit to prevent torture in places where its officials are.
