YRA: fact-finding committee formed on targeting JIN TV satellite crew

The announcement of the formation of the committee came during a statement published by the Free Media Union on Saturday.

According to the statement, the committee will begin its work by preparing an expanded report on the targeting by a Turkish drone of a car that was carrying journalists working for the JIN TV satellite channel, on August 23, which resulted in the martyrdom of the satellite channel member, Najm al-Din Faisal, and the injury of the journalist working for the satellite channel, Dalila Akid.

It is expected that other organizations and specialists from inside and outside Syria will participate in the committee to provide support and assistance in research and investigation tools, and it will work to investigate any crimes and targets against journalists and freedom of opinion and speech, to be a more accurate tool in documenting crimes against journalists.

The committee aims to investigate the incident of targeting the JIN TV crew, uncover its circumstances, and publish a statement with all the details related to the targeting process to clarify its nature.

Likewise, it will work to "identify the weapon used in the incident and determine the parties directly responsible for the incident, the names of the people involved in it, document the investigation process, send its results and share it with human rights organizations and international organizations concerned with freedom of opinion and expression, and the protection of human rights."

For his part, Ahmed Al-Ameed, Chairman of the Fact-Finding Committee, commented on the targeting of a satellite vehicle (JIN TV) with a missile from a drone, saying: “A dangerous development in the operations of targeting journalists, and a frightening indicator that threatens the safety of journalists in areas of armed conflict."

He stressed, during a press statement to ANF agency that this targeting must be taken into account, and should not go unnoticed. “Because it will be difficult for journalists to practice their work under unsafe skies, and it will also be difficult to train journalists on this new type of danger and ways to avoid it.”

It is expected that the research and investigation processes within the committee and the results of the investigation will contribute to understanding the pattern of new forms of risks, and how to deal with them in the future, or at least taking measures to reduce the proportion of this risk.
