Arab convergence with Damascus … Syrians fate is neglected by states’ interests

The Syrians have not yet felt any step towards a solution, contrary to their aspirations for which they revolted, represented by change and democratic transformation, with the Damascus government insisting on its puritanical mentality, which means that the reasons for severing Arab relations with the Damascus government still exist.

The Jeddah meeting ended without an agreement on Syria's return to the Arab League, which may explain the existence of Arab differences and issues that are still pending over the idea of the Damascus government reoccupying its seat in the Arab League, at least in the foreseeable future.

The meeting, which included the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and their counterparts in Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, agreed that "the political solution is the only one for the Syrian crisis, the need to end the human suffering, create conditions for the return of the displaced, limit weapons to state institutions, and combat terrorism in all its forms and organizations."

The consultative meeting came after mutual visits between Arab countries and the Damascus government, most notably the visit of Damascus Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad to Saudi Arabia and Egypt after a break that lasted more than a decade, as part of the efforts of Arab countries to restore bilateral relations with Damascus, which were severed since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, in protest. The Damascus government forces suppressed the popular movement.

'It has serious repercussions'

The Syrian crisis is still going on without the Syrians taking any step towards a solution, contrary to their aspirations for which they went out for change and democratic transformation, while the Damascus government still maintains its same puritanical mentality, which means that the reasons for severing Arab relations with the Damascus government still exist.

The momentum shown by the Arab countries in accelerating the restoration of their relations with the Damascus government, regardless of the reasons that led to severing them in the first place, indicates the extent to which the former marginalized the demands of the Syrian people, and that the gains on the economic and security level, and the level of withdrawing the Damascus government from under the Iranian cloak is more important to them, according to observers.

The co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration, Bedran Çiya Kurd, has previously warned that any normalization process that does not take into account the positions of the Syrians and the lived reality, and without talking about a comprehensive political process, "will be tantamount to bringing conflict and conflict in Syria back to square one and prolonging life." The Syrian crisis will continue for decades, and this will have serious repercussions and undesirable results.

"Pleasing the Iranian side"

Syrian political analyst Samer al-Khelaiwi said in an interview with ANHA’s agency, "The attempts of the Arab regimes to stand with Bashar al-Assad continue, but what is new in that is that there are some Arab regimes that are now working to rehabilitation his regime and do not take into account the demands of the Syrian people."

Al-Khelaiwi attributed these attempts to "the weak American position that allowed these regimes to deal with Assad despite the sanctions imposed on the latter," noting that "during the era of President Trump, he prevented the regimes from dealing with Bashar al-Assad, and Caesar's sanctions were present, and therefore they did not dare to deal." with him."

Al-Khelaiwi pointed out that "some countries, especially Saudi Arabia, whose attempts at normalization with Bashar al-Assad were remarkable, came as a result of the Iranian-Saudi consensus and normalization between them, which included other files, whether in Yemen, Iraq or Syria, and it seems that Saudi Arabia wants to sacrifice Syria for the sake of it." Satisfying the Iranian side in the absence of the American role in the region.

The Arab League failed to resolve the crisis

What is remarkable about the issue of Arab rapprochement with the Damascus government is its disregard for international resolutions regulating a political solution, foremost of which is Security Council Resolution 2,254 on a political solution.

The Syrians believe that the Arab moves would re-empower the Damascus government as it was prior to the start of the popular movement without achieving their demands or circumventing them, while al-Khelawi believes that the demands of the Syrian people were not approved by the Arab League so that the Syrian people feared them.

And the Syrian political analyst, Samer al-Khelawi, stated that "the Syrian revolution started despite the fact that all the Arabs and the world were with Bashar al-Assad, and it will continue until it achieves its goals, and even if this regime returns to the League of Arab States, nothing will change in the matter, because it is known that the League of Arab States Since the beginning of the revolution, it has failed to reach a solution in Syria, and now, even if the regime returns, it will not be able to find a solution if there is no approval from Western countries, Britain and the United States, and this matter is completely unlikely.
