Unprecedented depletion of the reservoirs of the Euphrates Dam Lake!

The Euphrates Dam operations room revealed an unprecedented depletion of the reservoirs of the Euphrates Dam lake, and confirmed that the dam lake lost 2 billion cubic meters of its natural stocks, as a result of Turkey's continued blocking of the water of the Euphrates River, which threatens a humanitarian catastrophe that threatens the lives of 7 million people.

The Euphrates Dam Lake lost 2.5 billion cubic meters of its natural reserves, due to the Turkish occupation state's seizure, since the beginning of 2021, of more than half of Syria and Iraq's share of the river's water, which should not be less than 500 m2/s.

The storage capacity of the Euphrates Dam lake is estimated at 14 billion cubic meters of water, with a length of 80 km and a width of 5 km.

The administrator in the Euphrates Dam operations room, Imad Obeid, confirmed that: "The level of the Euphrates Lake has now decreased to 299 meters above sea level, a decrease of 5 meters, due to the reduction of water imports by the Turkish state."

Imad Obeid explained that the quantities of water stored in the Euphrates Lake are currently estimated at 11.5 billion cubic meters of water, and he stressed: "The lake has lost more than 2 billion of its natural reserves."

Obeid revealed the existence of an unprecedented depletion in the reservoir of the Euphrates Dam lake, and explained: "The quantities of consumption currently for irrigation and drinking, in addition to generating electric power, and passing more than 150 cubic meters per second of water to Iraq, in light of the blocking of the Euphrates water, have led to a depletion." Unprecedented for lake stocks.”

As the Turkish blocking of water continues, it will result in an economic and humanitarian catastrophe that will add to the suffering of the population, and approximately 7 million people living on the banks of the Euphrates will be affected.

According to the latest statistics of the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee in Tabqa, the areas of agricultural land that were damaged by water reduction amounted to more than a thousand hectares in the countryside of Tabqa city.

Most of the drinking water stations located on the Euphrates Lake have also gone out of service since the beginning of the Turkish blocking of water, which numbered 7 stations, forcing the water units in Tabqa to find emergency solutions to restore them to service, by replacing the horizontal pumps with vertical ones, but these solutions did not find beneficial in light of the continuing increase in water level shortage.

Obeid said, "The priority of the General Administration of Dams is to secure drinking water and irrigation water for agricultural lands for the residents of North and East Syria, and then generate electric power."

Imad Obeid stressed that in the event of a continued shortage of water supply by the Turkish occupation state, the work of the dams, whether Tishreen or the Euphrates, will be stopped periodically, in order to preserve water at the largest possible amount of it in the dam lakes.
