Member of Swedish Parliament expresses his opposition to submission to Turkish blackmail

A member of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Swedish Parliament, Hàkan Svenneling, expressed his dissatisfaction with the recent trends of the new government and its acquiescence to the blackmail of the Turkish side, and stressed that he would work in Parliament with other parties to hold the government accountable for its recent positions without referring to Parliament.

Yesterday, Thursday, November 10, a delegation from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, consisting of the representative of the Autonomous Administration in Europe, Abdul Karim Omar, and the representative of the Autonomous Administration in the Scandinavian countries, Shiar Ali, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Swedish Parliament and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee met in the Swedish Left Party, Håkan Svenneling, at the headquarters of the Autonomous Administration Representation in Stockholm, the capital.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed views on many issues of common interest, especially the repercussions of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden, Finland and Turkey last June; Following Sweden and Finland’s request to join NATO, in addition to Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Bellstrom’s statement disassociating himself from supporting the People’s Protection Units and the Democratic Union Party, which is considered a clear acquiescence to Turkey and incompatible with democratic values and Sweden’s positions in support of the oppressed peoples, which caused disappointment among the people Kurdish and components of NES.

On November 5, Swedish Foreign Minister said that "the country's new government will distance itself from supporting the People's Protection Units," at a time when Sweden is seeking Ankara's approval to join NATO.

The Autonomous Administration delegation expressed its understanding of Sweden's decision to join NATO and it explained that this should not be at the expense of the Kurdish people who struggled for democracy and peace and security, and made great sacrifices in the face of ISIS.

In a statement to our agency, Omar confirmed, in connection with the meeting, that "relations have been developed and strengthened with a number of countries, including Sweden, which was a pioneer in providing support on the basis of common challenges. Which is not befitting the history of the relationship between the Swedish people and the Kurdish people, at this time when it requires more support for the Autonomous Administration to defeat terrorism for security and peace.”

Omar pointed out that Svenlink expressed his appreciation for the sacrifices of the Kurdish people and the components of NE Syria in the face of global terrorism, expressing his clear position and opposition to the memorandum of understanding that was signed in Madrid, and his dissatisfaction with the recent trends of the new government and its acquiescence to the blackmail of the Turkish side. He stressed that he would work within parliament with other parties to hold the government accountable for its recent positions without referring to Parliament. He also affirmed his clear and supportive position for the Autonomous Administration, and his support for the Kurdish people in their struggle to secure their legitimate rights and achieve democracy and justice.

The Autonomous Administration delegation also met with members of the Swedish Kurdistan Civil Society Initiative, namely Omar Sheikhmus, Kardo Baksi, Naila Aras, Ahmed Iskandari, Birx Hourani, Radwan Altun and Mir Ham.

During the meeting with them, they talked at length about the repercussions of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden, Finland and Turkey, the new Swedish government's directions to acquiesce to Turkish demands, and the need to work together Kurds within Swedish society to pressure the Swedish government in order to thwart the chauvinistic Turkish scheme targeting the Kurdish people and the achievements that were achieved at the beginning of the new millennium.
