Amina Omar assesses of consultative meetings as glimmer of hope in solving Syrian crisis

During these meetings, several key points were discussed to resolve the Syrian crisis, notably political developments, the need for a political solution, the national identity of the whole, and the importance of decentralization for Syria's future.

A solution to the Syrian crisis

To assess the three meetings held in Aleppo, Raqqa and Qamishlo, ANHA’s agency met with the co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, Amina Omar, who explained that these consultative meetings at home are a complement to the Stockholm consultative meetings, noting the main points discussed, saying: "Several key points have been made and are very important for a solution to the Syrian crisis."

On the discussions at the centre of the prospects for a political solution in Syria, Amina stated: "On the first day this axis was discussed, and there were rich views during it, most of which agreed that the Syrian-Syrian dialogue is the most successful way to reach a solution to the Syrian crisis, and therefore all Syrians should gather, dialogue and agree to convene a comprehensive Syrian national conference, the outcome of which would be the establishment of a political body that would establish a transitional phase."

Imposition of a single identity on various Syrian spectra

The Syrian Democratic Council was responsible for holding such dialogue meetings and for maintaining them until all Syrian parties' visions were consolidated and agreements reached.

During the meetings, the discussion on the topic of the inclusive national identity was one of the main themes discussed by the interlocutors, and on the discussions on this topic, Amina Omar explained: "There were different opinions regarding the national identity, and that the Syrian regime is the main reason for the lack of access to an inclusive national identity as the imposition of one identity and one color on the different spectra of Syria and the marginalization of the rest of the private identities, which is the reason for deepening the crisis and also the cause of social problems in general in Syria."

The final communiqué of the Qamishlo Consultative Forum considered that Syria's inclusive national identity brings together, under its ceiling, national, ethnic, cultural, religious, class and social diversity on the basis of full and free citizenship, a changing, composite and flexible identity based on recognition and acceptance of the other, not on the basis of smelting, forced inclusion and blunt homogenization.

Syria's future form decentralized

Amina Omar drew attention to the interlocutors' views and proposals on decentralization, saying: "Within this axis, too, there were rich views, most of which agreed that Syria's future form was decentralized, given that the hardline central regime was the root cause of all the problems experienced by the Syrian people, but that there was a difference in views on the form and type of decentralization, i.e. that it would be administrative, geographical or political."

Discussion of the mechanism for convening the Conference on Democratic Forces and Personalities

As to whether the Preparatory Committee for the Conference of Democratic Forces and Personalities will continue these meetings, Amina Omar indicated that on 28 September there will be a meeting in Brussels. "It is also on the Stockholm trajectory, of course with wide spectra of democratic personalities and forces to discuss key topics in preparation for the 4th session in Brussels, also in October, where it will be determined whether there is a fifth session or not, after which the Conference of Democratic Forces and Personalities will be held."

She stressed that before the conference, the mechanism of the conference and the body that will emerge from the conference will be discussed and the name of the body will be determined, in the presence of all the personalities who attended the meetings.
