Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch, has died at the age of 96.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen "passed away peacefully" this afternoon at Balmoral. The King will remain at Balmoral until he returns to London tomorrow.

Before that, Buckingham Palace confirmed Thursday that the Queen was under medical supervision at Balmoral after her doctors became "concerned" about her health.

The last published photo of the Queen officially appointing the new prime minister, Liz Truss, was taken at Balmoral on Tuesday. Then she postponed a virtual meeting of the Privy Council, today, after doctors advised her to rest.

Her eldest son, Prince Charles, will now become king, while his eldest son, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, will become heir to the throne.

And Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary), born on April 21, 1926. She is the constitutional queen of 16 of the 53 countries of the Commonwealth that she presides, while she headed the Church of England and spent 70 years at the head of the kingdom.
