Why has Turkey intensified its attacks against North-East Syria?

The co-chair of the Kurdistan National Congress, Ahmed Karmous, said in a statement to our agency: "These attacks must be deeply analyzed. The Turkish attacks stem from the mentality that Turkey has followed since the time of the Ottomans, all the way to the time of union and progress and the building of the Turkish Republic. This mentality establishes itself on ending and obliterating and the extermination of the Kurdish people, and it strives to eliminate any Kurdish gain wherever it is found.”

Ahmed Karmous stressed that the Turkish occupation state revealed dozens of times its clear hostility to the Kurdish people and their cause, and noted: "They seek to legitimize their attacks against the Kurds, by saying (it is a war of existence and non-existence for us)."

NATO strategy change

Karmous drew attention to the tripartite summit held in the Iranian capital, Tehran, between Russian President Putin, Iranian Raisi and Turkish Erdogan, and stressed that the meeting agreed to protect each other's interests, followed by the Sochi meeting between Putin and Erdogan, which included how to deal with the current situation in Syria and how to protect all countries. For its interests, and during the two meetings, the focus was on the role of the Kurdish people in Syria and their position on the American presence in the region.

Ahmed Karmous believed that the Turkish-Iranian-Russian trinity did not reach a common formula, and said: "Because the three countries intersect their interests with each other within the Middle East, Iran has interests and seeks to preserve these interests, Russia and after its war in Ukraine and its siege by the international community. It entered a difficult stage and only Syria was left in its hands, so it seeks with all its energy to preserve its presence and interests in Syria. As for Turkey, it has put all its goals in the matter of Syria aside in order to eliminate any will or gain achieved by the Kurds in Syria.

Ahmed Karmous explained that the Turkish occupation state is seeking to take advantage of the existing contradictions in the region to launch attacks against North and East Syria, and said: "Turkey is seeking to take advantage of the ongoing Ukrainian war, NATO's positions on this war, and the Iranian presence in the region to launch new attacks.”

Karmous pointed out that what is observed now is that Turkey has not obtained permission to launch a ground aggression against north, east and Syria, so it launches attacks via drones, artillery and tanks to weaken the will of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Autonomous Administration, and said: "In order to strengthen its position in any negotiations that take place later."

Turkey aims to control the entire border areas in Rojava and Southern Kurdistan

Karmous saw that Russia does not want Turkey to control another area within Syria because it is a NATO country, and said: "Russia does not want Syria to get out of its control, because Syria is the only country in the Middle East where there are bases and a Russian military presence."

He said, "These attacks will continue for a certain time. Turkey's main goal is to control the entire border areas in Rojava and Southern Kurdistan before 2023, these areas that it defines within the so-called Misak- Milli."

Ahmed Karmous stressed that the Kurdish people in the North and East of Syria have an unparalleled democratic project in the Middle East, so Turkey, which suffers from an economic, social and even political crisis, is afraid of this project.

Karmus believes that the international silence will not last long, and some countries will change their positions. He said, "The Turkish attacks and the policy it follows in the region will pose a threat to the interests of some countries. Recently, Turkey made statements about America and said that it supports terrorism, and the International Coalition led by America carried out an attack in the regions." During Biden’s meeting in Saudi Arabia with eight countries, America made a statement, through which it indicated that their forces would remain in Iraq, Syria and North and East Syria and would not abandon those areas in favor of some countries, referring to Russia and Iran, said that if necessary, our forces would remain for 2040.

Karmous continued: "One of the indicators of the collapse of Turkish politics in Syria and north and east Syria is the recent statements made by Turkish officials, which touched upon the need to open channels of dialogue with the Syrian regime."

According to Ahmed Karmous, the main reason for the silence of the international community, which could change at any moment as a result of the accelerating situation in the region, is the failure of all Kurdish and Kurdish forces to rally around a common strategy as a result of not holding a Kurdish national conference, and this leads to the movement of some forces outside the strategic frameworks of the Kurdish issue.

Karmous highlighted the reasons why the Turkish occupation state intensified its attacks against North and East Syria, and noted that these intensive attacks stem from Turkey's realization that time is not in its favour, because its ruling regime is close to collapse, and on the other hand, the Kurdish issue is now being promoted at the global level, He said: "It is not possible to predict how long these attacks will continue, but the coming days will clarify that."

Ahmed Karmous referred to the position of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the recent statements issued by the forces, and said: “The Syrian Democratic Forces are using the legitimate right of defense, according to the principles and foundations of the revolutionary struggle. The forces and the Autonomous Administration put pressure on the international forces and the International Coalition to impose a no-fly zone in the airspace of North and East Syria

Ahmed Karmous drew attention to the fact that Turkey does not give any importance to the Damascus government, and said: "Turkey targeted one of the points of Damascus forces in Kobani and killed a number of its soldiers. This is clear evidence that Turkey does not give any value to these forces, so dialogue channels must be opened. between the Damascus government, the Autonomous Administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces, to deter Turkish attacks and work to liberate the occupied areas and eliminate extremist mercenaries.

The co-chair of the Kurdistan National Congress, Ahmed Karmous, called on all democratic forces to unite in order to deter Turkish policies.
