​​​​​​​Aldar Khalil: attacks targeting Shengal constitute a threat to Rojava

Member of the co-chairmanship of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Aldar Khalil, spoke to ANHA’s agency about the Iraqi military movement in Shengal, in conjunction with the launching of violent attacks by the Turkish occupation and the Kurdistan Democratic Party on Başûr, north and east Syria.

Khalil stated that after the Turkish state, in alliance with the Kurdistan Democratic Party, announced the attack on Başûr and the legitimate defense areas, the bombing and attacks on many areas in north and east Syria did not stop for one day, since the 17th of this April. He indicated that a number of Iraqi officials had made statements in this regard, and that official Iraqi institutions had taken a position on them, describing this attack as a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and declaring that they would not accept it.

Aldar Khalil believes that the Iraqi army’s attacks on Shengal at such a time, despite all these situations, is suspicious, and said, “At a time when the Turkish occupation, in alliance with the Kurdistan Democratic Party, is launching such an attack on Başûr and north and east Syria, Although the president of the republic and the head of the Iraqi government was not elected, Al-Kazemi took advantage of this void and moved, directing the Iraqi army to Shengal.

Instead of taking a stand against the Turkish occupation and the betrayal of the KDP, it attacks Shengal, in conjunction with these attacks. Naturally, Shengal was subjected to 74 firmans. Do you think they want to add another firman to these firmans. Will their response to the Turkish occupation be in this way? Is it correct to launch an attack on the force that defended the people of Shengal in the face of the massacre, and made the people return to their homes safely? And to what extent would such an attack serve Iraq at such a time?” Khalil adds.

Aldar Khalil, also referred to the threats and dangers that this situation leads to, saying: “We are convinced that these attacks by the Iraqi army on Shengal pose a danger of re-committing the massacre against the people of Shengal on the one hand, and create a threat to the people of Rojava on the other hand, and we the people of Rojava, are following this issue with concern. If the Iraqi army launched such attacks in conjunction with the Turkish occupation’s launch of an attack on Başûr and the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s attack and siege alongside the Turkish occupation, it is a siege on Rojava and forces us to take the necessary measures in this regard. We are still trying to figure out the nature of this situation, as we did not expect the Iraqi government to take such a step, at a time when it had to mobilize to defend its country, and send its forces to areas occupied by the Turkish state instead, from sending it to Shengal. It should also tell the Turkish state 'Enough'."

Khalil expressed his doubts about the Iraqi army's movements in Shengal, and said, "Sending its army to Shengal raises doubts and reflects the dangers to our people in Rojava as well, and this will cause many problems in the region."

Aldar Khalil ended his speech, referring to the siege and agreement against Kurdistan, and said: “A wall was built between Shengal and Rojava recently, and now they are massing their forces in Shengal, and there are attempts to assign a figure close to the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Shengal. While the Turks are besieging Rojava from everywhere. Indeed. Do you think the Al-Kazemi government wants to play a greater role in this siege, do you want to send a message to the Turks, did it make an agreement with the Turkish occupation and the Kurdistan Democratic Party? We do not know what the issue is. The Iraqi people, and the Iraqi people in particular, take all these issues into consideration."
