As part of a series of activities launched by women's movements in northern and eastern Syria, the Yazidi Women's Union in Rojava organized a seminar, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which falls on November 25.

Dozens of members of the Yezidi Union of Afrin Canton, and the Union of Yezidi Women in Rojava, in addition to the participation of members of civil institutions and councils, and representatives of political parties, came together.

The seminar began with a minute of silence, followed by the formation of a bureau of three female administrators: the administrator of the Yezidi Women's Union in Rojava, Suad Hasso, the co-chair of the Yezidi Union of Afrin canton, Aisha Seydo, and member of the Union Ohin Alo.

The crimes of the Turkish occupation against Yazidi women

The seminar focused on the crimes of the Turkish occupation in the Shingal district, organized by a member of the court, Suad Hasso, in which she said: "The mercenaries loyal to the Turkish occupation, and on direct orders, committed grave violations against the Yazidi woman, including killing, kidnapping and rape, and all this before the eyes of the international community."

In the panel discussion, a member of the Court revealed the outcome of the crimes committed against the Yazidis and the Yazidi woman in Afrin during the Turkish occupation attacks on Afrin canton and to the present day.

It confirmed the martyrdom of 15 Yazidi women, and committing massacres against three Yazidi families by the Turkish occupation. It also changed the demography of Yazidi villages in occupied Afrin, by building mosques, imposing Islamic dress, and looting their property.

In the same context, civil society organizations of Afrin region issued today, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a statement denouncing the practices of the Turkish occupation against women in occupied Afrin.

Dozens of members of civil society organizations of Afrin region, the teachers union, councils and communes gathered in Sardam camp, holding placards that read "Women are the basis of a free life", "Violence against women is violence against society" and "No  for violence against women” and “stop violence against women”.

The statement was read in Arabic by the co-chair of the Bar Association of Afrin, Nariman Hussein, and its text read:

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on November 25, 1999 as a day of solidarity with women to enjoy their freedom and dignity, this resolution was issued after a number of international women's organizations launched several initiatives to stop violence against women.

As for the Kurdish woman, she was able, in light of the revolution of Rojava, northern and eastern Syria (July 19, 2012), to lead the revolution, but this did not appeal to the nationalist and capitalist regimes and states, especially the Turkish state, which occupies several areas in Syria from Afrin  Jarabulus, Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî, targeting female activists and politicians, and even the unarmed.

What the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries practice against women is one of the most heinous violations. The martyrdom of the martyr Barin Kobani and Hevrin Khalaf will remain a disgrace on the forehead of the Turkish state and the countries that support it.

And to cultural reasons, such as ignorance and lack of knowledge of how to deal with others, which is considered a main factor in the practice of violence and physical abuse, such as beating, killing and kicking.

The two lectures called for intensifying work to transcend the traditional and reactionary foundations of masculinity that perpetrate daily killings and persecutions against millions of women, which prevents the growth of women's role and creativity.

The two lectures considered the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this year represented by the occupied women of Afrin, and the Afghan women who resist all forms of oppression and slavery.
