Senior Russian delegation meets Assad in Damascus

Today, a high-ranking Russian delegation headed by Alexander Lavrentiev, the Special Envoy of President Vladimir Putin, Syria, Damascus, was met with Bashar al-Assad.

According to the official SANA news agency, affiliated with the Damascus government, Bashar al-Assad received today a Russian delegation headed by Alexander Lavrentiev, the special envoy of President Vladimir Putin, who is visiting Syria to participate in the joint periodic meeting of the Syrian and Russian coordination bodies on the return of refugees and displaced persons, held in Damascus.

The agency said: "During the meeting, the two sides praised the positive results that are being achieved on the ground as a result of the active and effective work and joint efforts of the two parties in order to secure appropriate conditions for the continued return of refugees to their cities and villages and to accelerate the pace of national reconciliation."

In November 2020, Russia organized a conference for refugees in the Syrian capital, Damascus, and mobilized it in the media and politically, but it did not achieve any results on the ground, as it was boycotted by Western and most Arab countries.
