Damascus Government siege causes grave catastrophies to Shahba

The agricultural sector in Shahba district faces many difficulties with the start of the winter farming season, as a result of the siege imposed by the Damascus Government, owing to the lack of supplies and agricultural requirements, which have a negative impact on agricultural areas in the canton.

Syrian regime checkpoints that extended between Aleepo city and Shahba canton still impose severe siege since the beginning the occupation and fortrcing exodus on Afrin people to Shahba canton, where Afrin region's residents suffer from severe siege, in which basic materials for life, food commodities, fuels (fuel, gas) and agricultural supplies. (fertilizers, seeds) and medicines have been prevented to enter the city.

Large sums of money had been imposed by Damascus Government to be paid on foodstuffs, oil derivatives, and medical medicines, where trucks that loaded with fuel, foodstuff…etc, being prevented to enter without paying taxes.

Co-chair of Agriculture Committee in Afrin region, Bassim Osman, noted that the agriculture sector in region is facing a catastrophic situation, this year the rainfall that have been fallen it was not enough for agricultural lands, so the farmers were forced to irrigate their lands relying on wells that need to fuel, which has reduced the proportion of cultivated land to less than half. "

However, the siege imposed on Shahba district by Damascus Government has a particularly negative impact on the areas of irrigation agriculture and is leading to a deterioration of the agricultural situation in Shahba district.

Due to the lack of fuel and seeds several farmers had been refrained to plant their lands with winter crops.

He concluded his speech by appealing concerned parties and humanitarian Orgs, to intervene immediately to lift the siege on Shahba canton and allowing to enter basic materials for continuing life and to avoid occurring a catastrophic humanitarian against Afrin region's people.
