On Wednesday, July 28, the United States of America imposed new sanctions on individuals and entities affiliated with the Damascus government and other mercenary groups backed by Turkey, led by "Ahrar al-Sharqiya" and the terrorist "Abu Hatem Shaqra" responsible for the assassination of Syriankurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf.

The statement of the US State Department said that the "Ahrar al-Sharqiya" group was involved in killing of the politician Hevrin Khalaf, in October 2019, and that its members were responsible for looting private property of the civilians, and prevented displaced Syrians from returning to their homes.

The co-chair of the SDC, Amina Omar, spoke to ANHA agency about this, saying, "We in the Council welcomed the United States of America to include Turkey-backed figures and groups on the sanctions list, and we issued a statement to that, and we view this measure as an advanced and expected step from the new US administration is concerned and focused primarily on human rights files and violations committed against civilians in particular.

She added, "enlisting Hatem Abu Shaqra, who is responsible for the assassination of the martyr comrade Hevrin Khalaf and the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction in sanctions as a first step, and nearly two years after they committed these crimes and violations that reached the level of war crimes, is evidence that the international community is closely following these files." Through the reports they receive from the relevant organizations in this region.

The co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council called for additional and expanded steps and said, "These sanctions must include all terrorist groups and groups that commit these terrible violations against the Syrian people, wherever they are. Sanctions are a good first step, but they must be followed by other subsequent steps, and these steps are through holding the perpetrators who committed These violations are before international courts so that they can be punished.”

On the reasons for this American move, journalist Sarkis Qassarjian said, “In the general view, these sanctions are read as another indication of the confusion of American policy towards the region in general and especially in the Syrian file, as the mentioned faction consists of elements whom Washington has named as moderate opponents, trained and financed, and then gifted them to ISIS. They ended up in the Turkish lap.

He explained that "the decision is late and can only be seen in a political context related to Washington's new vision of its tasks in the region on the one hand and the nature of its relationship with Ankara on the other hand, otherwise what explains the delay in its issuance."

He added, "I think that any delay on the part of Turkey in implementing the American vision towards the region and the world including Russia, China and Iran of course, will be reflected in the form of pressures on Ankara, which began indirectly by targeting its military arms in Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh and others, which are on the verge of turning into sanctions. Immediately if the Turkish insurrection continues.
