Member of Al-Shahba Canton Council, Mostafa Al-Hamdo, said, “Previously, women were oppressed with all their rights. After we have become aware of the democratic movement, we noticed a vast difference. Women have become involved in all activities and organizations in society, and we have noticed the advancement of women in their ideas and their victory over the male mentality and the path of self-development.”

Customs and traditions marginalized role of women

Al-Hamdo continued, “The customs and traditions that were imposed on us made us see that women were created in order to marry and do household chores, and were deprived of practicing their hobbies. They were even marginalized in our society. But the thought and philosophy of the leader Abdullah Ocalan removed that view about women, so they became effective members in society, and we are now following that thought to complete the equation of equality between men and women.”

As for the member of the Women's Committee in Al-Shahba Canton Council, Fatima Al-Hassen, she said, “At the beginning, I bless the Women's Day on March 8th to all women in the world. In the past, we did not know that there is Women's Day that the world celebrates, but after we have joined the democratic movement and got acquainted with the thought of the leader Abdullah Ocalan and the training of free thought, we learned that women are of great importance, and that they are not housewives, as was implanted in our minds previously.”

Fatima continued, “Women have importance in all political, economic, social and other fields, and that democratic thought has positively affected the mentality of men, as they have become appreciating the meaning of the comradeship spirit at work, and have given importance to women and the family.”

For his part, the Member of Al-Shahba Canton Council, Ahmed al-Ahmed said, “We consider the eighth of March as a day of remembrance for women, which is celebrated all over the world. Previously, women were deprived of their most basic rights, such as completing their studies. They only used to study elementary school, and then to stay home and do housework, but today we see that women have broken these restrictions thanks to the ideology of the democratic nation which made them an opinion and decision makers, determining their position in life.
