According to what Somali media reported, government forces were escorting a number of trucks transporting coal from the provinces to the capital, Mogadishu, between the cities of Niluwein and Afgooye to secure them, and the elements of the Al-Shabaab Movement are heavily deployed in that region.

Three trucks capsized due to the armed attack and the clashes that took place between armed men and the government forces that were accompanying them.

Media outlets quoted eyewitnesses as saying: "During the attack, 9 people were killed, and 2 of them were drivers driving vehicles that transported coal, and 7 were from government forces providing vehicles, and two government soldiers were wounded."

Local officials from Lower Shabelle Governorate said that "Al-Shabaab carried out the attack, and investigations are underway to find out the losses of the attack, and pledged to present the results later."

Al-Shabaab did not claim responsibility for the attack, but it carried out similar attacks targeting vehicles transporting coal and escorted by government security forces, with the aim of securing them.
