US President Donald Trump signed a package of punitive measures against Turkey, which was recommended by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, according to two people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg, but the two people did not disclose the nature of these sanctions.

The sanctions will be imposed under CAATSA, and Trump, who has long increased his personal relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has resisted bipartisan calls from Congress to punish Turkey for the deal with Russia.

The White House National Security Council did not respond to a request for comment, and Treasury and State Department officials did not respond.

The Turkish lira fell after Reuters reported earlier that sanctions would likely target Turkish defense officials, including the head of the major defense procurement agency.
