The defense budget bill received 335 votes from 430 in the House of Representatives, with strong support from Democrats and Republicans alike, and this far exceeds the two-thirds majority of the House votes needed to override Trump's presidential veto, according to a report by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

The Senate is expected to vote on the legislation this week, and backers hope Trump will reconsider his threat to veto if it passes by a similar margin to what happened in the House of Representatives.

The National Defense Act sets out the Pentagon's policy regarding the number of ships and guns to be purchased, the payment of salaries to soldiers, and ways to counter geopolitical threats.

The bill includes drafting that would force the president to impose new sanctions on Turkey over its acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defense system.
