Who are "Roj Peshmerga", how did they promote it among Rojava young men?

They were deceived ... Turkey is who trained Peshmerga Roj

After dozens of so-called "Peshmerga Roj" elements became acquainted with the reality of this armed group and the reason for its formation, and made sure that the Turkish occupation state is the one running them through the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the so-called Kurdish National Council, they defected, returned to Rojava and joined the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Through a series of interviews held by our agency with dissidents of the so-called "Peshmerga Roj," we will talk about the fact of this armed group's formation, its links to the Turkish MIT and its players, and its position on what is happening in Rojava and Kurdistan in general.

'The formation'

The so-called “Peshmerga Roj” was formed in 2012 with the instructions of the Turkish government and the implementation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Başûr Kurdistan, after promoting the policy of displacement from Rojava through the parties of the Kurdish National Council which was formed in late 2011.

This group includes the people of Rojava who were affected by that promotion, and went to Başûr Kurdistan, but the Kurdistan Democratic Party put them in camps such as Domiz camp to implement its plans on them.

As a result of preventing them from leaving the camp, the lack of job opportunities, and the youths' need for money, the special war within the Kurdistan Democratic Party began to promote in the camps a military force whose mission is to protect Rojava in order to encourage youths to join this armed group.

Accordingly, poor young men began to join it, receiving military training by the Turkish intelligence in special camps that were opened in the areas controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Başûr.

This armed group was called "Peshmerga Rojava or Leşgerî Roj", and it receives orders directly from the Zirvani forces, which are special forces of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and cooperate closely with Turkish intelligence.

The so-called "Peshmerga Roj" consists of three brigades, the number of its members according to some media outlets is estimated at 4,000 individuals.

The Kurdistan Democrtatic Party claims that those who joined this armed group are defectors from the Damascus government forces in order to cover up its policy aimed at forming an armed force of Rojava people to be used for the party’s own interest and to implement its plans in the region.

The leader Mostafa Jumaa in the Kurdish National Council (ENKS) had previously promoted that the number of these forces reached tens of thousands.

Riyad Salah al-Din, one of the founders and defectors from Peshmerga Roj, said that one of their terms with the leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party when forming this group was "not to work with the political parties in Başûr and Rojava."

The return of the Peshmerga Roj to Rojava has been mentioned many times, especially in the agreements that took place between the Kurdish National Council and the Democratic Society Movement since the beginning of the Syrian crisis.

Despite the attacks that Rojava was being exposed to by Jabhet al-Nusra, ISIS and other mercenary gangs supported by Turkey, the Peshmerga Roj did not move, and it did not issue any indications of its intention to defend Rojava, in contrast to what it was promoting in media.

'The truth on the mouthpiece of a dissident'

Salar Mohamed Khair Ismail, a defector from the so-called "Peshmerga Roj" was born in Qamishlo in 1996, defected from this group, and returned to join the Syrian Democratic Forces in 2018.

Salar Ismail recounted his story and said that he went to Başûr Kurdistan with the aim of joining Peshmerga Roj in 2016, as his family has been loyal to the Kurdistan Democratic Party since ancient times, and his father’s demand was that one of his sons join the party’s forces. Salar added that he had grown up on these illusions without knowing the truth.

On this basis, Salar went to Başûr Kurdistan and joined the so-called Peshmerga Roj, thinking that he would return to his city and protect Rojava from the attacks it was exposed to.

Salar underwent training for 45 days at the hands of Turkish intelligence within the 3rd Brigade, or what is known as "Hêzê 3."

Salar said that when asking the Kurdistan Democratic Party's Peshmerga officers about their being trained by four Turkish army officers, their response was that these officers were from the coalition forces.

However, during the Turkish occupation attacks on Afrin in January 2018, Salar knew the truth about this armed group after they demanded their leaders to go to Rojava and protect Afrin from the occupation attacks, where the demands of the youths were rejected and they were subjected to harsh punishment by the officers of the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

He pointed out that there are approximately 4,000 armed men from the so-called "Peshmerga Roj" in Başûr, and called on them to return to Rojava in any way despite the restrictions and pressures that the Kurdistan Democratic Party exerts on them to prevent them from returning.

'Turkey sent Peshmerga Roj to confront  Guerrilla forces in Garê Mountains'

According to the information that Salar obtained from his comrades in the "Peshmerga Roj" and is still in contact with them, the Turkish occupation state was the one that issued the orders for "Peshmerga Roj" to go to Garê Mountains to clash with Guerrilla forces.

Salar described this group's departure to Garê Mountains and fighting Guerrilla forces as a "very shameful act."

Salar believes that these Turkish orders came at a time when talks were being held to achieve Kurdish unity after the initiative launched by the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, to thwart these talks.

'He find out the truth after his return'

Salar Mohamed Khair Ismail explained that the officers of the Peshmerga Roj and the Kurdistan Democratic Party were tarnishing the reputation of SDF by constantly talking about it in order to deceive young men, so that no one would think of returning to Rojava and defending it.

He added: "After returning to Rojava in 2018, I saw the exact opposite of what I claimed, and now I am a fighter in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces, and I appeal to my comrades to return and join the ranks of SDF."

Salar pointed out that there cannot be two military forces in Rojava, and asked: "Is it acceptable for a force to return to the region and become partners without making sacrifices?" He added: "SDF has made sacrifices, liberated cities and towns, and made many gains. No second military force can be accepted with the presence of a military force under the roof of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Salar Ismail called on the leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Kurdish National Council to think about what they are doing by sending Kurdish young men to confront Guerrilla forces because "these movements affect the Kurdish people as a whole."

'Another defector and other information'

Among the defectors from this armed group is the young man Jihad Shams al-Din Haji who went to Başûr in 2012 and worked in various professions until 2015 when he joined the so-called Peshmerga Roj.

Jihad and three of his brothers joined the " Peshmerga Roj " after he was also subject to deception, like the rest of the youths.

Jihad said: "They deceived us. They told us to join these forces to protect our Kurdish cause, go to Rojava and fight ISIS and the Syrian regime, but they betrayed us, as the Kurdish National Council put its hand in Turkey's hand to fight the Kurdish people."

Jihad emphasized that Turkey is the one that gives orders to the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the National Council to move "Peshmerga Roj" and direct them towards Kurdistan mountains to fight the Guerrilla forces.

He added: "They told us that our mission is to defend the Kurds in Syria, but the Kurdish National Council went and agreed with Turkey against our people. They told us that we will protect Afrin, but they punished everyone who asked to go to Afrin to defend it. Whoever asked to return to Rojava was punished."

He continued, saying: "The Kurdish National Council says that Peshmerga is affiliated with it and aims to protect the Kurds and Rojava, but it agrees with Turkey and uses this force to eliminate the Kurds."

He confirmed that "Peshmerga Roj" was established to fight the People's Protection Units and later the Syrian Democratic Forces to serve the Turkish agendas.

'History will hold the traitors accountable'

Jihad Haji touched on the Kurdistan Democratic Party sending Peshmerga Roj to the areas of the Guerrilla forces and said: "Those who headed to the mountains of Kurdistan to stand up to the Guerrilla forces cannot be forgiven, and history will record the Roj Peshmerga and the Kurdistan Democratic Party betrayal to the Kurdish people."

Jihad believes that the Kurdish people have opportunity to unite to protect and liberate Rojava from the Turkish occupation under the roof of the Syrian Democratic Forces, considering it the "future Syrian army."
