A senior American diplomat said that the United States is still considering closing its embassy in Baghdad if the Iraqi government does not put an end to attacks by Tehran-affiliated groups on foreign interests in the country.

While the US envoy to Syria James Jeffrey confirmed in an interview with the "Defense One" website, "This case is still going on. The threat was not false, it was very dangerous," and added: "Relations with Baghdad remained intact, even after the US State Department threatening to close the embassy."

Of note, the Green Zone in Baghdad, which includes the headquarters of foreign missions, has been under attack since 2019, which US and Iraqi officials have attributed to groups affiliated with Iran.
