Today, the Taliban called on the incoming administration of US President-elect Joe Biden to abide by the February agreement to withdraw US forces, according to Reuters.

"We would like to assure the new American president-elect and the future administration that the implementation of the agreement is the most reasonable and effective tool to end the conflict between our two countries," the movement said in a statement.

The United States will withdraw its forces under the agreement that provides for the withdrawal to be completed by May, subject to certain security guarantees. However, violence has escalated across the country with the Taliban attack on provincial capitals, and talks have stalled in the Qatari capital.

Groups such as the United Nations have raised questions about al-Qaeda, with a senior UN official telling the BBC last month that the group was still "closely linked" with al-Qaeda.

Outgoing US President Donald Trump had made ending the war in Afghanistan a big promise in his election campaign, and said in an October tweet that troops could be out of Afghanistan by Christmas.
