The directorate said in a tweet on Twitter, "al-Masri, who is believed to be the second man in the organization, was killed in a special operation in Ghazni province," while the FBI declined to comment, according to Al Arabiya. Net.

Al-Masri has been charged in the United States with having provided material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organisation, and conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals. Abu Mohsen al-Masri is an Egyptian citizen with the name Hussam Abdel Raouf.

This comes after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced, last month, that less than 200 al-Qaeda operatives are still in Afghanistan.

This month marks 19 years since the US operation in Afghanistan to topple the rule of the Taliban movement, which was providing sanctuary to al-Qaeda militants who attacked the United States on September 11, 2001.

The inter-Afghan peace process began last month in Doha, which has good relations with the Taliban, but despite the talks, fighting between the movement and Afghan government forces has intensified in recent weeks.
