The Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement: "We call on Turkey to stop this deliberate provocation and start preliminary talks with Greece immediately."

To that, a Greek government spokesman said today that his country will not participate in exploratory talks with Turkey as long as the Turkish excavation vessel "Oruç Reis" remains in the continental shelf of Greece, while Germany called on Ankara to stop "provocation" in the eastern Mediterranean.

On Monday, Greece said that Ankara's decision to send the ship to an area near the Greek island of Kastelorizo near the Turkish coast represents " a major escalation" and " a direct threat to peace in the region."
