German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said from Berlin before his trip to Cyprus and Greece: "Ankara must abandon its method that mixes detente and provocation if the Turkish government is interested in holding talks, as it has repeatedly confirmed," according to Reuters.

Maas appealed to Turkey to remain open to talks and called on Ankara not to resume gas exploration in the most controversial offshore areas, adding that Germany is in solidarity with Cyprus and Greece as partners in the European Union.

A Turkish ship set sail on Monday to conduct seismic surveys in the eastern Mediterranean, prompting Greece to issue an angry new demand for EU sanctions against Ankara.
