Russia, Egypt agree to dismantle militias, exit of foreign forces from Libya

On Monday, the foreign ministers of Egypt and Russia stressed during a phone call the need to dismantle the militias and the exit of all foreign forces from Libyan lands.

This came in the call made by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, during which consultations were held on a number of regional issues of concern to the two countries, and to enhance joint cooperation.

Ahmed Hafez, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Shukry and Lavrov exchanged views on the accelerating developments in the region, especially the situation in Libya, where Shukry stressed the importance of freezing the field situation, reaching a comprehensive and formal ceasefire agreement, as well as the need to dismantle the militias, and the exit of all foreign forces from Libyan territory.

The two sides also discussed, according to the spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, ways to move to active negotiations in order to reach the desired political solution in Libya.

The two ministers also discussed developments in the Syrian file, and the need to continue pushing forward the political path in order to reach a comprehensive settlement of the crisis based on the relevant UN references in a manner that preserves the unity, independence and sovereignty of the Syrian territories and guarantees the security, safety of the Syrian people and the state's cohesion with its national institutions.
