More than 70 mercenaries arrested in Deir ez-Zor so far

ISIS mercenaries exploit the vast Badia in the northeastern countryside of the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor as areas for its deployment and hidden from the eyes of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that liberated the region in 2019, so the commanders of the SDF hubs in the desert see that it is necessary to comb the Badia to deter the sleeper cells.

On June 4, SDF launched a large-scale campaign in which more than 7,000 fighters participated to pursue ISIS’ cells whose activities increased in the southern regions of al-Hasakah city and the northern and eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor city.

The northeastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor is witnessing large movements and large-scale combing operations between both the SDF and the international coalition forces, in addition to the intensive flight of the coalition’s warplanes since the first day to today.

Despite the extreme heat and dust storms in the desert, the military campaign continues in an effort to end ISIS’ cells in those areas, as confirmed by the participating fighters and commanders.

On what this desert is witnessing and about the reasons for security measures and large-scale operations in this desert, the commanders of Deterring Terrorism campaign made clear to Hawar agency: “The desert is wide and vast, and allows ISIS terrorists to spread and hide from our eyes in the region.”

They pointed out that ISIS mercenaries are trying to take advantage of this desert to target their military forces and the civilians in the region, so it is witnessing intense movements, confirming their detention in this desert so far more than 70 mercenaries.

Today, the Deterring Terrorism campaign entered its sixth day in a row, in which SDF managed to arrest more than 70 people between suspected ISIS mercenaries and mercenaries, including Syrians, Iraqis, and Lebanese, among them a member of al-Qaeda classified on the international terrorism list.
