Somali journalist: Turkey is using its base in Mogadishu to destabilize the Horn of Africa

Mogadishu has Turkey's largest base outside its territories, and although the declared goal of al-Qaeda is to help train Somali forces, Turkish media have acknowledged that the al-Qaeda site gives Ankara strategic importance in the Horn of Africa, indicating that al-Qaeda could be a gateway to the commercialization of Turkish arms.

The Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service announced some time ago that it managed to thwart the most dangerous attempt to smuggle Turkish weapons planned by international smuggling networks.

According to the statement, more than 18 thousand Turkish-made handguns were seized and hidden inside 229 boxes of electronic devices to cover them so that they would not be discovered, and their value is estimated at about half a billion Ethiopian birr.

Commenting on this, the Somali writer and journalist specializing in Horn of Africa affairs Khaled Mohamed Ejaih said in a special statement to Hawar Agency that: "There is a possibility to smuggle these weapons from the Turkish base in Mogadishu to destabilize the Horn of Africa, pointing out that Turkey is training militias affiliated with the government of Somali President Vermajo in its base in Mogadishu, he said.

The Somali journalist, who specializes in Horn of Africa affairs, pointed out that "the Somali government is using these forces to destabilize the safe area, such as Gilmdug and Gopaland, and there are reports that Vermajo intends to use these forces to fight Somaliland in the future."
