From a sewing workshop to manufacturing masks in Sheikh Maqsoud

After the outbreak of the Corona pandemic in all parts of the world, the demand for protective supplies such as gloves, masks, and sterilizers has increased, thus a decrease in the quantities offered in the markets emerged not to mention some merchants’ monopolization and profiteering. Some workshops initiated transforming their work into sewing masks, and offering them to pharmacies at factory price, and some of them are sold for free, as part of a humanitarian initiative to stand up to this pandemic, as well as helping families with low incomes.

A workshop manufactures approximately 20 thousand masks per day, supervised by a specialized committee for quality control and sterilization, and distributes about 1500 masks to institutions that are exempt from the ban, such as the Internal Security Forces (Asayiş).

Workshop owner Anas El-Akkad said: “After the outbreak of the Corona pandemic around the world, we closed the workshop based on decisions taken by the General Council in the Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood, by imposing a curfew, and then I converted the workshop from ready-to-wear garments to gags, to meet the requirements of the people due to the lack of masks in pharmacies and the urgent need to them.

He added: "This step was to help the people of Sheikh Maksoud and Ashrafiyya to prevent the Corona virus that swept the world," and he continued, "We sell masks to pharmacies at cost."

On sterilization of masks after sewing, Al-Akkad added, "We detail the masks and sterilize them with medical materials, and there is a specialized committee for quality control and sterilization."

In the end, Akkad called on all workshops to undertake such an initiative to help families with limited incomes under the current circumstances.
