A YPG leader, our fight against terrorism will continue

YPG founding was officially announced at the end of 2011. They included hundreds sons and daughters of the region from "Al Jazeera, Kobane,  Afrin and Aleppo," as an effort of Rojava people to protect their areas in Syria from any attack, after the situations worsened and fighting spread over the Syrian territories.

For talking about the importance of YPG's role in fighting the mercenary gangs under different names and ISIS, their role and duties in the light of the recent military developments, and their main objective and endeavor, Hawar met the leader in YPG, Hasan Qamishlo.

YPG are the first disciplined force on the Syrian scene

The commander, Hasan Qamishlo, pointed out that the People Protection Units were formed urgently to protect the area on a system and objectives, so that it can be able to thwart the attempts of the Baathist regime to have influence in the area, and  thwart attacks on the Kurdish regions.

Hasan Qamishlo noted that People Protection Units were the beginning of the formation of disciplined military forces on the Syrian scene with the participation of many components to fight the mercenary groups and thwart the plans targeting their areas and existence: "With the attacks which were carried out by Jabhet al-Nusra mercenaries on Serêkaniyê city, and our forces countering and defeating the attacks, our forces were able to emerge as a new force on the Syrian scene, and based on their principle in the legitimate defense of the region, young men and women of the region joined ranks of our forces; Kurds, Arabs and Syriacs as well."

YPG relied on simple capabilities

"At the beginning, YPG relied on simple capabilities whether in terms of weapons, or experience. They benefited from securing the weapons and ammunition, the gradual experience in the regions’ circumstances and the forces’ battles against the groups that attacked the area, like Jabhet al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham and others which targeted "Serêkaniyê, Kobane, Afrin, Sheikh Maqsood, Tel Koçer, Tel Hamis, and others to become military forces that aim at liberating the area from these groups."

Key role in defeating the mercenary factions

"Our forces played a key role in defeating those Turkish-backed groups and gangs supported by regional countries, based on the people's will to defend themselves reaching the stage of fighting ISIS mercenaries emerged in the Syrian crisis in the northeast of Syria from Kobane on," he said.

Hasan Qamishlo added: "Our forces were the first to fight ISIS terrorists, and attracted the world's attention after moving towards the transformation of military action in the region, and its transition to a new phase with the emergence of ISIS mercenaries and their control over large areas of the Syrian and Iraqi territory, and  transformation the threat from threatening the region to a threat to humanity at a time when many Iraqi, Syrian, and Peshmerga military forces have fled in the face of ISIS.”

YPG led and started the battle against ISIS

Hasan Qamishlo made clear that with the start of the new stage in fighting ISIS, People Protection Units, the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, which were formed as an umbrella for the different military forces that emerged to fight ISIS, our forces became key forces because they led and started the fight against ISIS, joined ranks and agreed with the local forces to liberate the north and east of Syria from the mercenary groups to become the Syrian Democratic Forces the foster of all the people of the region with all varied religions and ethnics.

Qamishlo explained that People Protection Units involvement under the Syrian Democratic Forces formed a new phase describing it as the phase of liberating the northeast of Syria. YPG participated mainly under the umbrella of the Syrian Democratic Forces in liberating many areas of the Syrian provinces and cities; Manbij, al-Tabqa, al-Raqqa, Deir Ez-Zor and the last Bagoz in the east of Deir ez-Zor city.

YPG will go on resisting the occupation

Hasan talked about the role of the People Protection Units in the current phase following the latest developments, he stressed: "The People Protection Units continue to assume their responsibilities against attacks in the region, and resist in the face of the recent attacks of the Turkish occupation and its new mercenaries on northern and eastern Syria and the coexisting components after its failure through its mercenaries of Jabhet al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham and ISIS.

He said: "The current stage for the Kurdish people in the region is the stage of existence and non-existence. The occupation seeks to eliminate with all its strength and potentials the Kurdish people, and displace them. It is determined on this systematic policy against the Kurds in cooperation with some traitor Kurdish parties that support and legitimize the occupation."

He added: "We in People Protection Units are certain that the occupation will not spare the opportunity to eliminate the Kurds, and we will not retreat from the protection of the region, and our resistance to this extent will not stop. We may lose some points in some rounds and circumstances, but our resistance will not stop."

He touched on the continued violations in the occupied territories and others on the Syrian border by the Turkish occupation army and its mercenaries despite the understandings saying: "Despite the agreements to stop the shooting, but the occupation army and its mercenaries continue to violate the agreements, targeting the villages and towns of Rojava, and our people are still suffering at the camps."

Self-dependence

"This battle has not ended yet for us and we are continuing to struggle in Serêkaniyê, Tel Abyad and Afrin because we have the right of defending our territory against the occupying forces. Occupation is occupation for us and our duty, job and mission as fighters are to prepare for sacrifice under various circumstances because there are no gains without sacrifice."

 "The current century is the Kurdish people century, so our people must be aware that we will not bow to any Turkish attacks and pressure. We will resist and remain with will and certainty of victory. We have to rely on our military forces without relying on the foreign forces. We may have contact with America, Russia and other countries, but it is just a policy," he said.

Protecting the rights of the people is a major goal for YPG

Hasan Qamishlo said: "YPG's objectives are clear from the outset. They are the forces that are based on  the legitimate defense philosophy to protect the region. This right is legitimate for all the peoples who face denial because they want to get their legitimate rights, and rely primarily on defense without attacking or threating any other party. They aim to save the rights of the peoples of the region, whether cultural, political or military, and preserve the rights of the region to live in a dignified and free way."
