Gharib Hesso blames Iraq, IC for Turkish attacks on Shengal

The co-chair of the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM), Gharib Hesso, held the International Coalition against ISIS and the Iraqi government responsible for the repeated attacks of the Turkish occupation army on Shengal city, which he considered as revenge for the defeat of ISIS.

Since its liberation from ISIS, Shengal has been the target of the Turkish occupation army’s air strikes since 2015. The city has not been subjected to any Turkish raid during the occupation of ISIS.

In August 2014, ISIS occupied Shengal, and the mercenaries committed massacres against thousands of civilians, in addition to kidnapping thousands of Yazidi women and destroying Yazidi places of worship.

The fighters of the Shengal Resistance Units and Women - Shengal Resistance Units liberated Shengal city from ISIS in November 13, 2015 for the city located west of Nineveh province in northern Iraq to become in the range of the Turkish air strikes, where the International Coalition against ISIS controls the Iraqi airspace.

‘Turkish attacks on Shengal is revenge for ISIS defeat’

About a week ago, Dukri village of Shengal was exposed to a Turkish air strike, which resulted in martyring four fighters in the ranks of Shengal Resistance Units.

On the frequent targeting of Shengal, the joint head of the Democratic Society Movement said: “The Yazidi community in Shengal is well known among the Iraqi people, and the Iraqi constitution recognizes the Yazidi people.”

Hesso pointed out that Turkey was the major supporter for ISIS attack on Shengal in 2014. He said, “The Yazidi people in Shengal are constantly exposed to a firman after another, particularly ISIS mercenaries’ attack on the region. The Turkish occupation was the main supporter of ISIS at the time, and it did not fight to remove it from the region. The Yazidi people organized themselves, formed their forces, and liberated Shengal with their own will.”

Hesso considered the repeated Turkish attacks on the liberated city of ISIS as revenge for ISIS mercenaries after they were defeated and expelled in Shengal with strength of the Yazidi people.

‘Criticizing Iraqi government silence’

Hesso expressed his surprise at the silence of the Iraqi government regarding the Turkish attacks: “Iraq is proud of its homeland and government for the presidency, ministers, and army it possesses. How the sovereignty of this country is violated?” He added: “This means that there is a policy and a plan in advance.”

Hesso criticized the Iraqi government saying, “The Turkish occupation received the green light from the Iraqi government. On this basis, it carried out the attack and committed a massacre in Shengal again.”

‘International Coalition’s responsibility about air raids on Shengal’

Hesso also held the International Coalition against ISIS responsible for the attacks on Shengal: “The International Coalition that claims to protect the region with drones is responsible for what happened.”

‘Yazidis stick to struggle’

Hesso stressed the Yazidis' resistance to all attacks: “The Turkish occupation cannot break the will of the people, as they cling to their religion alongside the struggle to free more women who have been kidnapped by ISIS mercenaries.”

The joint head of the Democratic Society Movement called for the Yazidi community in every direction and the Yazidi religious references to escalate their struggle everywhere.”

‘Turkey seeks to carry out demographic change’

Hesso pointed out that through its attacks, Turkey aims to make a demographic change in Shengal saying: “Turkey, by targeting the Yazidi people and Shengal Protection Forces in the region, seeks to exterminate its indigenous people, and remove them from Shengal Mountains for the settlement of its terrorist mercenaries, and this will affect the lands of Rojava, Başûr, and the Middle East entirely.”
