Shopkeepers in the Derik markets as well as motorists suffer from the phenomenon of astray cows and buffalos in the markets and streets, the way cattle spread there causes traffic accidents, in addition to droppings, cattle would also rush to devour the plants and trees at the platforms.

Witnessing some astray cows and buffalos wandering in the streets and markets of Derik has become a familiar scene, where some owners would let their cattle free in streets and markets to graze on rubbish and sometime they eat plants on the sides of the road.

This also caused a number of problems like traffic accidents, droppings that spread here and there, in addition to handicapping the movement of people posing danger on them.

Unnatural, environment-harming phenomenon

Nobar Kanjonian, from Derik city pointed out that Derik city has a rural character where cattle is raised, but owners let them free in streets and markets to graze and search in rubbish which is not a civilized scene at all, as well as causing traffic crises despite the fact that municipality has warned its owners to restrain them.”

Nobar appealed to owners of cattle to allocate a place for raising their cattle so that they would not remain astray at streets.

Abdullah Hamza from Derik as well said that cattle would search in the rubbish resulting in disgusting smells in the market.

Hamza demanded sending warrants to cattle owners to put an end to this phenomenon.

People’s Municipality released a circular, violators fined

An administrator in the Environment Protection Bureau Shilan Ali said that they have issued a circular prohibiting cattle within the markets, where measures will be taken like arresting the cattle, if repeated, the owner will be fined 50 thousand S.L.

Despite of that, Hawar news agency monitored some cattle wandering freely in the market particularly that it is Eid time where markets are busy with shoppers and cars, while people still look forward to taking serious measures to put an end to this phenomenon.
