Kurdish mathematician professor awarded Fields medal

The Kurdish professor Koçer Birkar was awarded the international award Fields which is named the Nobel Prize of mathematics.

Birkar has been named one of four recipients of the 2018 Fields medals, the most prestigious awards in mathematics at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the other three winners of the 2018 Fields medals are Peter Scholze from the University of Bonn, Akshay Venkatesh from the Institute of Advanced Studies and Alessio Figalli from ETH Zurich.

The origins of Professor Koçer Birkar go back to East Kurdistan’s Marivan province  where he applied for political asylum in Britain to become then a professor in Cambridge University.

The Fields Prize was awarded for the first time in 1936 by the Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, the medal is recognition for works of excellence and outstanding achievements, granted once every four years to medalists under 40.
