UN called on Jordan to open borders to Syrians fleeing battles

A spokeswoman for the Office of the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights called on Jordan on Tuesday to open its borders to the Syrians who try to escape the battles in southern Syria.

Since June 19, the regime forces, with the support of Russian warplanes, have launched an expanded military operation in the Syrian south targeting Daraa governorate, and more than 130 civilians have been killed in the shelling and dozens wounded. The residents in this area try to escape to the neighboring countries, but the border is closed to them.

According to Reuters agency, the spokeswoman for the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights liz Throssel said, "We call on the Jordanian government to keep its borders open, and we call on the other countries in the area to intensify efforts and receive the fleeing civilians."

On Monday, the spokesman for the United Nations’ High Commission for Refugees in Jordan, Mohammed al-Hawari, said that the number of people displaced in southern Syria as a result of fighting escalation 2 weeks ago, had risen to 270,000.
