Ballot boxes closed, sorting votes started in Iraq

The polling stations closed their doors in the parliamentary elections throughout Iraq at 6 pm on Saturday, and the Electoral Commission began directly sorting the votes.

This is considered the first time that an electronic voting system has been used to facilitate the processes of sorting and announcing the results. This is the third election that has been held since the US invasion of Iraq and the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime 15 years ago, and it is the first election that has been held since the defeat of IS mercenaries.

The polling stations whose number reached 8,959 opened at 07:00 am according to the local time.

The voting process was carried out according to a proportional law based on closed and open lists. The votes will be distributed to the candidates within 87 lists in 18 governorates according to their sequence within each list to obtain 329 parliamentary seats.

For its part, Baghdad Operations Command announced the success of the security plan to protect the voters without recording any incident in the capital.
