Lack of rainfall prevented agricultural growth, increased farmers' suffering

Girê Sipî canton and Manbij city in the Euphrates region have witnessed a lack of rainfall, which threatens the agricultural season not to achieve growth of crops, in this context, Hawar news agency reported the agricultural situation in the two areas.

Manbij city is like other areas in North Syria, which is famous for agriculture, but the lack of rainfall this year has hindered the achievement of agricultural development, in the midst of the efforts of the Agriculture Institution and Agricultural Pharmacy to correct the situation through the distribution of fuel and fertilizers and the provision of seed crops to develop agricultural growth.

During this winter, the Agriculture Institution and Pharmacy of Economic Committee of Manbij has provided all the agricultural requirements like provision of fertilizers and fuel in the institution and provided grain seeds at the pharmacy at suitable prices for farmers, however, the lack of rainfall has had an impact on the growth of the agricultural season, especially unwatered plantation.

Since the beginning of November 2017, the Institution has worked to pay wheat payments to all beneficiaries, and the disbursement of diesel fuel for agricultural tractors of the first batch and the second "200 liters per tractor, fruit trees in the amount of 40 liters per hectare" per month.

In addition to diesel fuel for summer crops in the amount of "40 liters for the vertical pump, 35 liters for the horizontal pump, 25 liters for the pump type electric plunger" per hectare per month.

As well as the distribution of fertilizer for all crops at appropriate prices according to the need of soil and plant by the institution and provide all the seeds of summer "cotton, yellow corn, summer vegetables" in the agricultural pharmacy of the Committee.

This year, the farmers in Manbij suffered from lack of rain, which resulted this shortage in the seasonal season, this will negatively affect strategic stocks and lead to a shortage of grain and crops, which will have to be imported from abroad to meet the food needs in full.

In this context, the citizen Safia Hasan indicated that they harvest barley for livestock, and they brought workers to the land because their piece of land is small and does not need to bring a combine.

The farmers in Manbij city began planting the seedling of summer vegetables and summer seeds in addition to laying hoses for irrigation seedlings, while the Agriculture Institution began distributing the fuel oil for the combines and studies in the city according to the appropriate conditions.

Girê Sipî canton was not better off than Manbij, the lack of rainfall increased the suffering of wheat farmers and combines' owners because wheat was not properly harvested, both the farmer and the combines' owner, who is processing his combine machinery, are receiving the harvest early.

"At the beginning of the year, we took all our measures to receive the harvest season, but the amount of rainfall in winter increased the farmers' suffering, as unwatered crops were not harvested, but we have some hopes in the irrigation crop, although it is not as good as required but we have to harvest it to cover the expenses of the farmer and combines' owners,” the harvester Mohammed Muslim says.

Farmer Mohamed Ali called on the concerned authorities to be lenient with the farmers and support them in the difficult ordeal they are going through.
